Clue 13 Solution: The Groby

How the Clue Works

Teams first had to find the answers to all the trivia questions on the colored pages. Half of the pages yield answers that are words, and the other half yield answers that are numbers. As with crossword clues, they must pay attention to the tense and plurality of the clues in order to get the right form of the answer.

The answers were as follows

(on yellow paper)

(on red paper)

(on yellow paper)

(on green paper)

(on orange paper)

(on green paper)

(on blue paper)

(on red paper)

(on blue paper)

(on orange paper)

The pre-filled-in answers should clue the teams that the words are to be entered into the rings clockwise, and the numbers (of the same color page clue as the words) are to be entered onto the back side of the rings clockwise (starting at the same space at the words). Further, teams should see that the numbers are entered in binary (where ones are shaded and zeros are left blank) and start with the most significant one bit (otherwise they do not fit). Once filled in, each of the rings (on the shaded side) has the capability to make any five-bit pattern when placed in the ring holder (00000, 00001, 00010, 00011, ..., 11100, 11101, 11110, 11111), thus will all the rings together, they are able to form all 225 possible patterns.

The rings are entered into the ring holder in order of the colors of the clue pages based on the title of the puzzle - GROBY - green, red, orange, blue, yellow with the letter side toward the slots.

The teams then need to form pairs of five-letter words on the slot side and look at the picture formed on the number (shaded) side. The words come the text of the Groby description:

Once this is done, the patterns on the back formed look as follows:

         * *     *    ****       *  ****   *   *  *****   ***
        *****   * *   *   *     **  *   *  **  *    *    *
         * *   *****  ****     * *  ****   * * *    *     ***
        *****  *   *  * *     ****  *   *  *  **    *        *
         * *   *   *  *  *   *   *  ****   *   *    *     ***

This spelled out # ARAB NTS.

The Solution

# ARAB NTS is an abbreviation for "Number of Arabian Nights", which is 1001. Entering this number into the phone system resulted in the next destination, Pioneer Park in Puyallup.
